Learn how to identify the Big Dipper (“The Drinking Gourd”) and the Little Dipper\, then make your own star map.\n\n\n\nUnderground Railroad Map — Trace key Underground Railroad routes and discover the differences between free\, slave\, and border states in 1860.\n\n\n\nFind the Conductor Scavenger Hunt — Search the galleries to learn about famous conductors including Harriet Tubman\, Elizabeth Van Lew\, Levi Coffin\, John Brown\, and Leonard Grimes.\n\n\n\nNature as a Guide — As a young girl\, Harriet Tubman developed a deep knowledge of plants\, wildlife\, and her surrounding environment\, and these skills later helped her guide others along the Underground Railroad. DESCRIPTION:Join author Francis Augustín O’Reilly for a deep dive into the pivotal Battle of Malvern Hill and the complexities of its outcome. \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Malvern Hill on July 1\, 1862\, marked the climax of the Seven Days’ Battles around Richmond\, Virginia. Fought on the doorstep of the Confederate capital\, Malvern Hill marked the first time the full might of General George B. McClellan’s Union Army of the Potomac and General Robert E. Lee’s Confederate Army of Northern Virginia met. Despite resulting in a Union victory\, the battle provided important advantages for the Confederacy\, as McClellan retreated to establish a safe base on the James River. \n\n\n\nFrancis Augustín O’Reilly has been a professional battlefield guide for 40 years\, as well as an award-winning author. He gives tours and lectures on topics of war and leadership all over Virginia and the world. DESCRIPTION:What happened on Antietam’s forgotten battlefield? Hear historian Bert Dunkerly reveal its hidden history and preservation. \n\n\n\nWhile Antietam remains one of the most famous engagements of the Civil War\, the lower end of the battlefield has been largely overlooked\, in preservation and in scholarship. This area saw the final Union and Confederate attacks of the day and many details of these actions remain largely unknown. Historian Bert Dunkerly will discuss why this area has been neglected and its recent preservation and public access. \n\n\n\nRobert M. Dunkerly is a historian who is active in historic preservation. He has authored seventeen books about the American Revolution\, the Civil War and other topics. Dunkerly has served as president of the Richmond Civil War Round Table\, taught classes at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture and Central Virginia Community College\, and writes for the Emerging Civil War and Revolutionary War blogs. The attack\, which left Sumner unconscious\, increased tensions across the nation and pushed the country closer to civil war. Join Paul Quigley as he explores what motivated Brooks’ actions and what it meant for an increasingly polarized nation. \n\n\n\nPaul Quigley is the James I. Robertson\, Jr. Associate Professor of Civil War History in the History Department at Virginia Tech\, where he also serves as Director of the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies and Director of the Center for Humanities. Quigley is the author of the prize-winning book Shifting Grounds: Nationalism and the American South\, 1848-65\, and has edited works in publications ranging from the Journal of the Civil War Era to the New York Times and the Washington Post.
